Neck Pain

The neck is a complex area of the body that has many functions. The neck supports the head, provides passage for blood vessels between the head and body, and provides critical support for the spinal cord and brain.  The neck is also an area of common injury and pain. If you experience pain in the neck or shoulders, numbness or tingling in the arms, or weakness of the arms or hands, you should contact Alignment Chiropractic and Pain Management.  Sudden injury from sports or accidents, herniated discs, blood vessel damage and pressure on the spinal cord are conditions that require medical attention.  Less serious causes like stress, poor posture, natural aging, and too much exercise can also produce neck pain.  Alignment Chiropractic in midtown Manhattan can help.

Mid-back pain

The mid-back is the middle region of the spine and contains the spinal bones called Thoracic Vertebrae. Each of these bones is connected to two opposing ribs.  The mid-section of the spine is also connected to a variety of muscles and connective tissue that make up the middle portion of your back.  The Thoracic Vertebrae, like the rest of the spinal column, also provides protection for the nerves of your spine and your spinal cord.  Due to a smaller range of motion, the mid-back is less susceptible to the injury, wear and tear that affects the upper and lower back.  However, active lifestyles, poor posture, office environments, and other influences can cause pain and discomfort in the mid-back.  If you are experiencing pain in the mid-back, you should contact the experts Alignment Chiropractic and Pain Management in New York City today.

Low back pain

Most people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. The lower back, also called the lumbar region, is a complex area and includes many spinal bones, nerves, muscles, and connective tissues.  There are many reasons why pain may be felt in the lower back and these can range from a serious injury or inherited disorders to normal wear and tear.  Heavy lifting, stretching and exercise can cause a strain, spasm or sprain in the muscles and connective tissues of the lower back.  Occasionally, a spinal disc may rupture or bulge outward, causing pressure on the nerves located in the lumbar region.  Most lower back pain is the result of an injury.  Pain may also be caused by a herniated disc, sciatica, or by degenerative disorders like arthritis and osteoporosis.  Stress, obesity, lifestyle and other potentially serious medical disorders can cause lower back pain.  If you are experiencing lower back pain, you should make an appointment to visit the expert physicians and therapists at Spine and Sports Medicine of New York City.

Sciatica

Low back pain and/or leg pain that usually travels down the large sciatic nerve, from the lower back down the back of each leg, is generally referred to as sciatica and is fairly common. This pain can be caused when a nerve root in the lower spine that helps form the sciatic nerve is pinched or irritated. For some people, the pain from sciatica can be severe and debilitating. For others, the pain might be infrequent and irritating, but has the potential to get worse. Usually, sciatica only affects one side of the lower body, and the pain often radiates from the lower back all the way through the back of the thigh and down through the leg. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected, the pain may also radiate to the foot or toes. By skillfully aligning the spine and restoring the hips and pelvis back to balance, the experts at Alignment Chiropractic have been very successful in resolving this condition.

Disc problems

Discs are the cartilage pads that separate and cushion and help connect the vertebrae that make up your spinal column. They serve as shock absorbers between each of the vertebrae and are constantly subjected to the pull of gravity and the torque from everyday movement. Disc problems can be the result of genetics, the normal "wear and tear" of aging, and injury. Disc function is greatly affected by the alignment of the spine. A mis-alignment or structural imbalance can force a disc to bulge, protrude, or herniate, which then can result in contact with the nerves and cause pain. This common back problem is one we see frequently. We effectively treat this malady by realigning the vertebrae and returning the spine to its normal range of motion, thereby reducing the pressure on the discs and spinal joints. We also incorporate strengthening exercises for the abdominal and back muscles because core stabilization is essential for prevention of subsequent disc problems.

Sports and Gym injuries - Joint dysfunction

At Alignment we are specially trained to treat joint disorders. Joint or articular problems are caused by osteoarthitis (degenerative joint disease), subluxations, sprains, intervertebral disc problems, and various abnormal changes in the curve of the spine. Joint dysfunction commonly occurs while training with weights at the gym or through overexertion while playing sports. Joints that are aligned improperly or are impaired will begin to degenerate rapidly if not attended to promptly and properly. By gently and carefully adjusting and aligning specific points on the spine, we can restore the natural balance and integrity of the spine so the joints will glide smoothly enabling the fullest range of motion and comfort.

Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body making it susceptible to overstretching, sprains, and injury resulting in pain. The shoulder has four tendons; which are connective tissues that join muscle to bone.  These four tendons, called the “rotator cuff,” are subject to injury and discomfort due to a wide range of causes.  There are many causes of shoulder pain, including swelling, inflammation, changes in the bone, and tearing of the tendons.  Arthritis and degenerative conditions, as well as the natural aging process, also cause shoulder pain.  Normal wear and tear may result in shoulder tendonitis, an inflammation of the tendons.  This occurs due to the shoulder’s wide range of motion and can be worsened by sports like baseball and tennis, in which the shoulder is extensively used.  Other shoulder conditions include bursitis - an inflammatory disorder, shoulder dislocation, shoulder separation, fracture, inflamed tendons near the shoulder, and “frozen shoulder syndrome,” which occurs when the shoulder is not moved due to a prior injury.  Our natural approach of balancing and aligning the spine supported by adjunctive therapies has helped our clients return to an active healthy lifestyle.

Whiplash

Whiplash is the common name given to the injury where the head is dramatically thrust forward and backward. Car accidents and falls can cause whiplash injuries. Symptoms of whiplash include headaches; visual disturbance; stiffness of the neck; restriction of movement; and shoulder, neck, or arm pain. These symptoms may or may not be felt immediately. It is estimated that most whiplash injuries are not felt for several hours, days, and in some cases even months or years following the accident. Even if you are not in pain following a whiplash incident, it is important to receive prompt attention to your injury, as the structural balance of your neck and spine is important to your health. We can assist in your recovery by correctly adjusting your neck and/or spine so it has the chance to heal properly. In addition, we can recommend stretching and strengthening exercises, and natural anti-inflamatories to put you back on the road to good health.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

CTS has become one of the most widespread occupational health problems we face today. It affects millions of people a year, and with our growing reliance on computers it appears that these numbers will only increase. The syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve just above the wrist. Pressure on this nerve can be caused by an injury or sustained use from common activities like typing, chopping, hammering, or pushing. Symptoms of CTS range from wrist pain, numbness, tingling, burning, weakness or loss of grip strength, and loss of sleep due to discomfort. There are a number of different ways to treat this condition. In most cases, a chiropractic adjustment to the affected area is an extremely effective solution. In some cases, a misalignment in either the back or neck can cause this condition, and by aligning and restoring balance to the neck and/or spine can also serve as an effective treatment option. These treatments, along with stretching, and strengthening exercises, can in most cases effectively alleviate and eventually eliminate the symptoms associated with CTS. If you are experiencing CTP, Alignment Chiropractic and Pain Management will help you return to a pain-free and active lifestyle. We are located in the heart of midtown Manhattan at the corner of 6th Avenue and 38th Street
